February's Club Ride took us to Galveston for brunch at the Mosquito Cafe and a tour of the Lone Star Flight Museum. Fourteen bikes made the trip, from the south side of Houston down I-45 to the island. This beautiful Spring day ride was one of our larger ones to date. We were heartily welcomed at the Mosquito Cafe, whose owner was there and turned out to be quite a Ducati enthusiast. We enjoyed their always-tasty breakfast bowls and scones.
Following breakfast we rode the seawall down to Scholes Field and the Lone Star Flight Museum. We spent an hour or more taking in the countless vintage aircraft on display, many of which are kept in flyable condition. It was quite an interesting visit, marred slightly by an unaccomodating staff.
We left the museum with plenty of time for an indirect route home. We rode down the remainder of the island to the toll bridge, crossing over to Surfside. SH 288 took us back towards Houston. The roads so far had been ruler-straight. To change that we detoured off at FM 1462 to Rosharon, and picked up Sandy Point Road (CR 42). This winding, two-lane path through the trees was the perfect antidote for the earlier roads. We made it safely through until the very last right-hander, where one of the bikes ran off the road and went down in a ditch. The group stopped to pull the bike and rider out of the mud, wiring a broken windshield stay so the rider could continue back to Rosharon. A friend was called to bring a truck and pick up the bike. The rest of the group returned home via SH 288. This was the first time anyone has gone down on one of our rides. Fortunately the downed rider sustained only a minor injury to his hand, and the bike's damage was mostly cosmetic (though not inexpensive).
The trip to Galveston proved to be a popular and enjoyable choice. Hopefully we will have many more, with happier endings!
