Ride to Round Top — December 2, 2007

Any ride to the northwest of Houston is bound to bring good roads and pleasant scenery. And this one did. Rain threatened as seven riders on seven bikes gathered for breakfast. A downpour greeted us as we prepared to leave, then took refuge at the service station next door. It ended quickly but left the streets wet. Damp roads and occasional rain plagued us through the first hour of the ride, rendering the curves much less fun than they should have been. At one point we nearly abandoned the ride.

Good thing we kept going though: the rain ended, skies cleared, and roads dried nicely by the time we passed through Frelsburg and hit the curves of FM 1291. Onward we rode to Round Top and our lunchtime destination, Royer's Cafe on the square. Although this eatery is well-known among motorcyclists, its fame is unwarranted. The food was decent but service was poor and prices quite high—topped off by an undeserved mandatory 18% tip and no separate checks. All in all, no reason to return.

The first part of the ride home was enjoyable. But what came later though was worse than the morning's rains! Shortly entering US 290 for the final leg we were confronted with an immense traffic jam. A bad accident had caused an hour-long stoppage—the kind where you kill your engine, put down the kickstand and walk around in the middle of the freeway for awhile. Once going we got into rain again! It was a relief to finally get home after that ordeal.

Hopefully next time we do this ride, it will be without rain, Royer's or traffic!
