A ways southwest of Houston lies a small town with the unlikely name of Blessing, Texas. "Blessing" was actually founder Jonathan E. Pierce's second choice for a name. His first choice—rejected by Postal officials—was "Thank God", an expression of gratitude for the good fortune of having the intersection of the Southern Pacific and New York Central (Missouri Pacific) Railroads there.
Mr. Pierce built the Hotel Blessing in 1906, its architecture inspired by the Spanish mission churches. Restoration began in 1978, and the following year Hotel Blessing was entered into the National Register of Historic Places. Both the hotel and coffee shop are open for business.
The Blessing Hotel Coffee Shop was our small group's lunchtime destination. On our way we picked up all the zig-zags we could find in the country roads. A nice ride that is sure to be repeated.
