Another very cool morning met the riders gathering at Kelley's for breakfast on Super Bowl Sunday. Today's ride would be a shorter one to accommodate everyone's plans for the evening, most involving some football game somewhere. Being a cold morning on a busy Sunday you wouldn't think many people would show up. Wrong! Fourteen bikes and riders departed Kelley's for a ride to the south and southwest of Houston.
The ride started down the Gulf Freeway towards Dickinson. The combination of freeway construction and an accident created a traffic backup in Webster, so we exited and followed an alternate route down FM 528 towards Alvin. We connected with FM 517 and returned to the planned route, following numerous (!) county roads to the east, south and southwest of Alvin. We picked up FM 1462 and rode through Rosharon, detoured off temporarily for some more back roads, then stopped for a break at FM 762. The next leg took us past Brazos Bend State Park and through a series of fast sweepers. The road was smooth and the traffic was light--excellent conditons. We ended up at the Southwest Freeway near Rosenberg. A vote was taken on whether to continue on an optional, longer route. We decided to cut it short and head back in on the freeway. A few of us stopped for lunch at a restaurant on SH 6, then went our separate ways.
This day's ride was one of the shorter ones, yet fun with all of the people who came along. While a recipe of mostly spaghetti with a dash of sushi and sauerkraut might not sound to appealing, it is a good mix of bikes for a ride together. |
