Ride to Brenham — November 18, 2006
Volare Restaurant
| After the November Friday night meeting was cancelled a group of us decided to get out on Saturday and enjoy the gorgeous fall day. Seven came out for breakfast at Denny's. A couple of those couldn't come along, but a few others joined us at departure. Altogether eight of us took to the roads on an interesting assortment of Ducatis. We ran some back roads and farm roads taking the long way to Bellville. Traffic separated us after a gas stop. The last two bikes dropped too far behind to see us take a left turn off the highway. We pulled up and waited, then watched as they missed the turn and zoomed past. No choice but for one of us to hook it at [censored] mph down the highway to retreive them. Once together again we turned south on Old Mill Creek Road. I (Carr) had threatened the group with some low water crossings, but to my disappointment they had been replaced with decent bridges. We did have a couple of low canine crossings though. We circled west then up towards Brenham for lunch.
I was in the lead as we crossed under US 290 at the edge of Brenham. The light changed red just as I went through the intersection, separating me from the rest of the group. I pulled onto the shoulder under the overpass to wait. Suddenly a cop came up behind me, flipped on his lights and stopped. I had just started talking to him when another cop came towards me from the other direction, going the wrong way on the street and shoulder and stopping just in front of me. I've never felt so wanted! The first one had stopped to see if I needed any help, and when I pointed to the group behind at the light he realized what was going on. The second one was on the lookout for a stolen yellow bike and thought he had scored. But as soon as he saw mine up close he realized his mistake. What a welcome to Brenham! Lunch at Volare was a treat. The restaurant has been cited for delicious, authentic Italian quisine. They—and the superb weather—were the impetus for our ride. Eight Italian bikes at an authentic Italian restaurant! Their chef didn't miss the point either. He and several staff members followed us out to take pictures. Volare is sure to be a stop for us in the future. Just be sure it's a Saturday; they are closed Sundays. With things to do in the afternoon the group seemed to want to head directly back to Houston, so most of us sailed back on US 290. I was glad to get home, let my linguine settle, and reflect on my run-in with the law. The pictures below were taken along the way and at Volare in Brenham. | |||
